sartorial - solo exhibition

2020, Michael Reid CLAY, Sydney.

Championing the beauty of ceramics in shades of white, this exhibition was split into two parts: Sartorial and Modern Antiquity

Sartorial Artist Statement: Engendering a sense of cheeky frivolity these works celebrate the joy of expressing oneself sartorially.

Highlighting the little touches that make an outfit this collections main aim is to elicit a smile in the viewer.

modern antiquity - solo exhibition

2020, Michael Reid CLAY, Sydney.

Modern Antiquity Artist Statement: Inspired by classic pottery shapes from Ancient Greece, I was struck that some still survive today.

As a counterpoint to our throwaway culture I yearn to create work considered to be a modern heirloom, harkening back to a time where pieces were collected, used and treasured to become a part of the fabric of family life and ultimately handed down over time.

Ruminating over this, I sat down to the potters wheel to rephrase those ancient shapes into more instinctual forms that speak of volume and generosity, in the process making a traditional subject new.
